Summertime Refresh
Just a little over 300 words … less than 90 seconds to read .. but stop and let it soak in
I sat down earlier this week to write this edition of Church Leader Insider. I flipped through my notes, saved websites, articles and turned down pages of books looking for a focus for the post. Perhaps an insight into what we can learn for the church from the burgeoning “appification” of pretty much everything in our world. Or maybe some thoughts from one of the leaders I have spoken with about multisite, their impending succession, or the impact of a residency program. Though you will likely see articles on these topics in the weeks to come, none seemed quite right.
However, my mind kept taking me to thoughts of rest and renewal and a call to just stop the striving and driving for a moment. Summertime is upon us after all. Though summer officially begins on June 21, my family and I are getting a jumpstart. We leave on May 27 for nine days in London and Paris. It was a Christmas present delayed by Omicron. We are looking forward to a full itinerary of rich history, amazing art, beautiful landscapes, unique culture, and great food.
But I am most of all looking forward to a change in focus. I’m looking forward to time away from a crowded calendar and never-ending email. I’m looking forward to unhurried conversations with Susan and our two adult sons. I’m looking forward to reflection. I’m looking forward to laughter. I’m looking forward to new chapters in our family story. I’m looking forward to rest.
So instead of writing about strategy or change, I’m writing about slowing down and changing focus.
Perhaps you need encouragement to do the same.
What are your plans for a summertime refresh?
As you prepare for summer, consider making plans to join with a group of other leaders of growing churches this fall for a one-year experience that includes a mixture of in-person gatherings, video resource calls, personal and professional coaching, and access to some of the most innovative senior leaders as mentors.
The next Leadwell Cohorts are forming now including senior pastors (under 40), second-generation megachurch pastors, senior pastors finishing well (55+), and executive pastors. If you are interested in applying for a spot, email me at greg@ligongroup.com or select a time to talk that works for you here. Note that registrations paid in full by June 30 will be discounted by $500.
